Search "workshop safety checklist" and you'll get a pile of YouTube videos where a guy in safety glasses waves at five things he always does (none of which he actually checks), then "DON'T DO THIS" compilations that are 90% spectacle. The written guide that covers a real home workshop — a one-bay garage or basement shop, beginner to intermediate tools, OSHA-realistic standards — barely exists. Same for "DIY workshop safety tips": Google's top results either buy into tool-brand safety porn or skip ahead to "buy a SawStop" without covering what you'd actually check on a Saturday morning.

This guide fills that gap. It combines the five safety systems every home workshop actually needs — PPE, fire, electrical, ventilation, and machine-specific rules — into one written reference, plus a printable wall-ready checklist you can tape to the bench. It's the layer that cluster is missing, and unlike a checklist PDF you download once, this one explains the why behind each item so you know which rules you can relax and which ones you can't.

Skip at your own risk

None of what follows is optional. A table saw laceration, a garage fire from oily rags, and electrocution from an ungrounded outlet all happen in home shops every year. The five systems below — PPE, fire, electrical, ventilation, machine rules — are the minimum. If your shop doesn't have all five, that's the gap to fix first.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

PPE is the layer you wear, not the layer you install. It's the last line of defense after every other safety system has done its job — and the only layer that protects you when something goes wrong. Five categories.

Eyes. ANSI Z87.1-rated safety glasses as the absolute floor — the "Z87" or "Z87+" stamp is on the frame. Z87+ adds impact resistance; for routing, miter saw cuts, or any tool that throws chips, Z87+ is worth the few extra dollars. Add a full face shield for grinding or for shaping acrylic sheets. Regular prescription glasses don't count — they're not rated for impact and a chip can hit behind the lens and into your eye.

Ears. A table saw at full feed produces 95–105 dB; a router hits 95–100 dB; a thickness planer is in the same range. Sustained exposure above 85 dB damages hearing permanently and the damage accumulates across sessions. Foam plugs are NRR 25–33 (good for occasional use); over-ear muffs are NRR 25–30 (faster on/off, comfortable for long sessions). For sessions longer than an hour or for any tool above 100 dB, use both — plugs under muffs add roughly 10 dB of protection.

Lungs. Fine sawdust (under 10 microns) reaches the lower lung and accumulates over years. Oak and MDF dust are also classified carcinogens by California Prop 65 and IARC. An N95 disposable mask handles occasional sanding and one-off cuts. If you sand or route MDF regularly, step up to a half-mask elastomeric respirator with P100 cartridges — reusable, better fit, and cheaper per hour of use. A MERV 11 air filter running while you work handles the fraction that escapes the tool's dust port.

Hands. Cut-resistant gloves (HPPE or Kevlar-blend, ANSI A4 or higher) for handling rough lumber, sheet goods with sharp edges, or any non-rotating blade. Important exception: never wear gloves near rotating cutters — table saw, drill press, lathe, jointer. The glove catches and pulls your hand into the cutter faster than you can react. The rule is simple: gloves on for handling, gloves off for machining.

Clothing. No hoodie drawstrings, no loose sleeves, no jewelry (rings, watches, bracelets that can catch), and either short sleeves or fitted long sleeves. Tie back long hair. A shop apron protects against minor chips and gives you pockets for a marker, tape, and small tools. Closed-toe shoes — leather boots, not sneakers — as the floor-level protection.

The "before you turn it on" check

Every session, before you switch on the first tool: glasses on, hearing protection on, dust collection on or mask on, sleeves/jewelry check, gloves off if you're cutting. The check takes ten seconds. The injury it prevents can take months to recover from.

Fire Safety

Workshop fires are rare but unsurvivable if you're not set up for them. Three distinct ignition sources in a small shop: oily rags (spontaneous combustion), overloaded outlets or extension cords (wiring), and dust collector fires (sparks into fines). Each one is preventable or containable with a small amount of equipment.

Extinguisher. One Class ABC dry-chemical extinguisher, minimum 5 lb, mounted near the exit door — not in a corner, not behind stacked lumber. ABC covers ordinary combustibles (Class A: paper, rags, wood), flammable liquids (Class B: solvents, finishes, gasoline), and electrical fires (Class C: motors, wiring, lithium battery). One ABC handles roughly 90% of the fires that actually start in garage shops. Mount it between 3.5 and 5 feet off the floor so you can lift and use it without stooping. Inspect it annually (pressure gauge, pin, hose) and replace or service it every 6 years.

Technique. The PASS acronym: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. The "base" part matters — spraying the flames does nothing; you have to hit what's feeding the fire. A 5 lb extinguisher gives you roughly 10–12 seconds of discharge, which is short. If the fire is past that point, leave the shop, close the door behind you, and call the fire department.

Oily rags. Linseed oil and most oil-based finishes generate heat as they cure. A pile of oil-soaked rags can hit ignition temperature in a few hours. Either spread them outside to dry flat, or drop them in a metal lidded can (a paint can with a tight lid, or a specialty rag can). Never toss them in a regular trash can inside the shop.

Dust collector fire risk. Fine dust suspensions can ignite explosively when a spark reaches them. Empty the collector drum outside, never indoors. Keep the drum less than half full — overfilled drums restrict airflow and trap heat. Inspect the drum and the inlet for sparks; metal ducting is significantly safer than plastic flex for the run between collector and tool.

Smoke detector. A photoelectric smoke detector (slower to false-alarm from dust, faster to detect smoldering fires than ionization) mounted on the shop ceiling or in the adjacent room. Battery-backed. Test it the same day you test the extinguisher.

Electrical Safety

The electrical layer is the one most home workshops skip. The breaker panel still has the wiring that was installed for the garage door opener and maybe one outlet — and that's now being asked to run a table saw, dust collector, planer, and shop vac simultaneously. Three rules below cover roughly 80% of the gaps.

GFCI everywhere. Under NEC 210.8, all 125V receptacles in garages, basements, and outdoor locations must be GFCI-protected. A GFCI outlet trips in roughly 25 milliseconds when it detects a ground fault above 5 mA — fast enough to prevent the lethal arrhythmia that ordinary thermal-magnetic breakers (which only trip on overload, not on ground fault) cannot stop. A garage floor is concrete or a damp slab; bare-hand contact with a hot wire or a wet tool is a real risk that GFCI is designed for. Cost is roughly $15–$20 per GFCI outlet versus $50+ for a GFCI breaker. A typical two-car garage shop needs 4–6 GFCI outlets minimum.

Dedicated 20-amp circuits. The table saw and the dust collector each want their own dedicated 20-amp circuit — not because they will trip a 15-amp circuit (they may not), but because they have inrush current on startup that briefly pulls 2–3× their rated amps. A table saw and a shop vac sharing a 15-amp circuit will pop the breaker on the first rip after start. Running them on separate 20-amp circuits adds roughly 8% to the install cost and eliminates the entire class of nuisance tripping. Cord gauge. Use the right gauge for the amp draw and the run length. The minimums for common tools:

Two extension-cord rules worth keeping pinned: never daisy-chain power strips ("one strip into another into a tool"), and never run a cord under a rug where friction wear goes unseen. Both are top-5 causes of garage-shop electrical fires.

Unplug before blade changes. The tool nameplate says "unplug before servicing" for two reasons — first, accidental startup while your hand is on the blade or chuck is lethal; second, the tool's capacitor can hold a charge for several seconds after unplugging on some models. Ventilation & Dust

Dust is the slow-burn health and safety problem. It doesn't bite the way a table saw does — it accumulates over years. Two distinct risks that get conflated: the lung risk (fine particulate + carcinogens from oak and MDF) and the fire risk (suspensions igniting in the collector).

Source capture vs ambient filtration. Source capture (a hose from the tool to a shop vac or dust collector) catches the bulk at the tool port — 80–95% depending on the tool and the hood design. Ambient filtration (a MERV 11 or better air filter hanging in the shop) catches what escapes. You need both. A shop vac alone leaves the fine particulate; a hanging air filter alone catches only what floats past it. Together they capture roughly 95% of inhalable fines.

Open garage door alone is not enough. A garage door open with no source capture and no ambient filter means dust spreads through the shop, settles on every surface, and recirculates every time you sweep. Worse, the dust moves out of the shop only when the door is open AND the wind is blowing in the right direction — neither is reliable.

Finishes and solvents. Oil-based finishes, lacquers, and solvent-based strippers produce VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are a different hazard from sawdust. Active exhaust — a window fan pulling air out, or spraying outdoors — is the minimum. A half-mask with organic vapor cartridges (the black ones, not the white P100) is the upgrade. The N95 dust mask does nothing for VOCs.

MERV 11 minimum. A MERV 11 filter captures particles down to about 1 micron — the size that reaches the lower lung. MERV 8 catches the visible sawdust but lets the fines through. A 1 HP dust collector (around $300) is the upgrade for a serious shop; a shop vac plus a Dust Deputy cyclone (around $90 total) is the minimum. Machine-Specific Rules

Per-tool rules. These are the items that don't generalize cleanly — each machine has one or two specific rules that, if you only know the general safety material, you'll miss. Use the table below as a quick reference before you fire up a tool you haven't used in a while.

Machine The rule most people skip
Table saw Always use the guard + riving knife. Stand to the side of the cut (not behind). Never freehand a rip — use a push stick for any piece narrower than 6 inches. Confirm kickback pawls move freely every session. GOOD the guard returns to position; REPLACE if it sticks or drags.
Miter saw Clamp short pieces — never hold a 4-inch offcut by hand. Wait for the blade to stop before lifting. Verify the lower blade guard retracts and snaps back freely. Pull the plug before changing the blade.
Plunge router Set bit depth so the cutter protrudes no more than 1/8" above the stock — more protrusion increases the kickback risk. Always feed against the rotation (the bit pulls into the cut, not pushes you). Unplug before any bit change.
Planer / jointer Limit runs to 6 inches wide and no shorter than the bed minus 6 inches (to keep your hands clear of the cutterhead). Never plane a piece smaller than the jointer bed — that's what a planer is for. Stand to the side of the feed direction.
Drill press Return the chuck key to its hook before you turn on the press — keys left in the chuck spin into your hand or face at full speed. Never blow off chips with your mouth or hands; use a brush or compressed air with safety glasses on.
Bench grinder Match the wheel RPM rating to the grinder's RPM (printed on the wheel). Maintain the work rest gap at 1/8 inch or less — wider and the workpiece jams between wheel and rest. Side guard covers the wheel. Eye protection non-negotiable.
