Every workshop owner faces this question eventually: the cuts are getting rougher, there's a faint burn smell on hardwood, the plywood is tearing out on the bottom edge — should you sharpen the blade or buy a new one?

The answer splits on three things: how the blade looks, how it cuts, and what the math looks like for this specific blade at this specific shop. There's no single threshold that works for every blade type, because a $40 thin-kerf table saw blade and a $180 full-carbide industrial blade live in completely different cost universes. This guide walks through the decision framework for each common workshop blade — table saw, planer, jointer, bandsaw — and gives you a printable self-assessment table at the end so you can punch in your blade's current condition and get a clear answer.

Signs a Blade Can Be Sharpened

The good news: most blades that feel "dull" are not dead. They're just past their optimal edge and need a sharpening pass. A mediocre-but-intact carbide blade is almost always a sharpening candidate, not a replacement.

Visual Cues

Pull the blade and hold it under a strong light. You're looking for four things, and you want all four:

Cut-Quality Tests

Three reliable signals that the blade is dull but salvageable:

If your blade passes the visual check and is showing these cut-quality signs, route it to a sharpening service. The cost is a fraction of replacement, and most carbide blades can be sharpened 4 to 8 times before end of life.

Signs a Blade Must Be Replaced

Some damage is not sharpenable. If any of the conditions below are present, sharpening will not restore the blade — sharpening works on the cutting edge, not on structural damage to the plate, the braze joint, or the missing teeth.

Replace — don't sharpen — if you see any of these
  • Cracks anywhere in the plate — even hairline cracks propagate under cutting load and become catastrophic failure risks.
  • Missing or chipped carbide teeth — more than 1–2 teeth with chunks broken out. Each missing tooth creates an imbalance and rough spot that sharpening can't fix.
  • Warped plate — the blade wobbles or won't track true after tensioning. A warped plate produces tapered cuts and is unsafe at speed.
  • Severe pitting or heat discoloration covering more than ~20% of the cutting edge. The steel has been heat-damaged and the carbide bond is compromised.
  • Delamination on stacked dado blades — the individual plates are separating. Sharpening cannot re-bond them.
  • Carbide that has physically fallen out — if there's an empty socket where a tooth used to be, the braze failed and a re-tip is the only fix, which exceeds the cost of a new blade.

These are not "might be worth sharpening" conditions. They are not borderline. The decision is replacement, full stop.

Per-Blade Cost Comparison: Sharpen vs Replace

Cost is the second half of the decision. Once you've confirmed the blade is sharpable, the math is straightforward: sharpening cost times the number of remaining sharpening cycles, vs replacement cost.

For premium carbide table saw blades ($100+), the lifetime cost is dramatically lower if you sharpen — typically $20–$30 four to eight times versus $80–$200 for a single replacement. For budget blades under $40, sharpening economics break down: the original purchase is so low that the sharpening service cost approaches the replacement cost, and the blade typically has thin carbide that won't survive many cycles anyway.

Bandsaw blades are a different category. They're treated as a consumable — most sharpening services don't handle them, the tooth geometry is too delicate for standard sharpening equipment, and a new bandsaw blade is cheap ($20–$60). Replace when dull, replace when cracked, replace when the set wears uneven and cuts start drifting.

The Quick Decision

  1. Visual: Any cracks, missing teeth, warping, or major pitting? Replace. All four visual checks pass? Continue.
  2. Costs: Did the blade cost over $80, and does a sharpening service in your area charge under $30? Sharpen. Was it under $40, or is the sharpening cost over half the replacement cost? Replace.
  3. Cycle count: Has it been sharpened fewer than 4 times and does the carbide still have visible tooth height? Sharpen. At 6+ sharpenings or no history? Send to a sharpening service for inspection — they'll measure the carbide and tell you if there's life left.
