Power Tool Zone

If you're building to sell or operating a small custom shop, layout efficiency becomes a business decision. Material flow, machine placement, and ergonomics directly affect how many pieces you can produce per day. At this scale, you also need to think about:

Dedicated outfeed space so you're never fighting the table saw to handle long stock. Ventilation

Fine dust is the invisible hazard. Most people understand that sawdust is messy; fewer understand that sustained exposure to fine wood dust is a real long-term health risk, and that certain species (particularly walnut and some exotics) are significant sensitizers. A dust mask alone is not sufficient for extended cutting sessions. Electrical

Most residential garage circuits are 15 or 20 amps at 120V. A contractor-grade table saw draws 15 amps at full load. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets are required by code in garages and required by common sense near any moisture source. Make sure your shop circuits are GFCI-protected.

Fire Safety

Finishing rags soaked in oil-based finishes (particularly Danish oil and tung oil) are spontaneous combustion risks. They generate heat as they cure, and a pile of them in a trash can will catch fire. Lay them flat outdoors to dry, or submerge them in water in a metal container with a lid. Keep a 5-pound ABC fire extinguisher mounted near the exit — not the back of the shop, the exit, so you can grab it while leaving if a fire catches.

Buying the table saw before figuring out where it goes. The table saw is the center of gravity for most woodworking shops. Its position determines every other tool's position. Start there on your floor plan, account for full outfeed clearance, and let everything else arrange around it.
