1. What size workbench do I need for a garage workshop? +

For most single-car garage workshops, a workbench in the 4–8 foot range handles 90% of projects. Depth matters as much as length: 24–30 inches gives you room to clamp deep stock without the bench eating all your floor space. Height matters more than people think — set the top so your palms rest flat when your arms hang at your sides, usually 34–38 inches depending on the work you do.

If you share the garage with a car, a smaller mobile bench (2×4 feet) on locking casters is the right call — it can roll out of the way for sheet goods and back into place for routine work. 2. How should I ventilate a small workshop? +

Two streams of air matter: dust removal at the source, and a slow background exchange for fumes and leftover particulates. A 4-inch dust port on each major tool, tied into a single collector with a cyclone separator, handles the first stream. The second is a quiet exhaust fan (around 150–250 CFM for a one-car garage) pulling air out through one wall, with a passive intake on the opposite side.

Open windows are not enough — they move air unevenly and most garages don't have a pair spaced for real cross-flow. 3. What's the right lighting setup? +

Plan for 100 lumens per square foot at the work surface, not in the room generally. That means a mix of overhead and task lighting: 4-foot LED shop fixtures mounted on 6–8 foot centers for ambient coverage, plus a focused LED above the workbench and another above the tablesaw. The task lights catch the shadows the overheads leave directly below your head and shoulders.

Color temperature around 5000K renders wood grain accurately. Warm 2700K fixtures are fine for the floor but hide burn marks and glue squeeze-out — small details that matter when you're finishing a piece. 4. How much power do I need (dedicated circuits, 240V)? +

Map your loads before buying tools. A tablesaw and a dust collector each want their own 20-amp 120V circuit — sharing one trips the breaker under heavy load. Heavy stationary tools (240V tablesaw, jointer, planer, large dust collector) need a dedicated 30–50 amp 240V circuit each, and most older garage panels don't have room for more than one or two.

5. Do I really need dust collection? +

If you're only running a drill and a sander, a shop vac with a HEPA filter is enough. The moment you add a tablesaw, planer, jointer, or router, you need real dust collection: a single-stage collector with a cyclone separator and 4-inch ductwork to each big tool. Fine wood dust isn't just a nuisance — long-term exposure is a documented health risk, and it accumulates invisibly throughout the shop.

6. How do I protect the workshop floor? +

Three options dominate: interlocking PVC tiles, rolled rubber matting, and an epoxy coating. PVC tiles (about $2/sqft) snap together, hide drips, and can be lifted if you move — they're the most common choice for weekend woodworkers. Rolled rubber ($3–5/sqft) is heavier and quieter underfoot, and is the standard in metalworking shops where hot chips and oil are a concern.

Epoxy is gorgeous but a permanent commitment: once it's down you can't take it with you, and bad prep means peeling within a year. 7. What's the smartest storage layout? +

Walls are free square footage — start there before buying any floor-standing cabinet. A French cleat system across the full back wall lets you rearrange hand tools, clamps, and supplies without re-drilling whenever your collection changes. Mobile bases on every stationary tool (tablesaw, planer, jointer, dust collector) collapse the shop onto a 10×10 footprint when you need floor space for sheet goods.

10. How often should I maintain power tools? +

Three quick habits prevent 80% of premature tool death. Brushless motors aside, every corded power tool needs to be unplugged and have its air vents cleared with compressed air every 5–10 hours of use — sawdust packed into the motor housing is the single biggest cause of burned-out tools. Check brushes on brushed motors quarterly; replace them when they're under 1/4 inch long.

Run each saw with no stock and listen for a change in pitch monthly. New vibration, a rumble, or hesitation under no load means a bearing is going, and bearings are cheap to replace before they seize.
